1. Saving energy, cost and water while using water heaters. In case you have a water heater already installed in your house that is not an energy efficient one, even then you can make certain initiatives to save energy, water and cost. This can be done even by retaining your existing water heater. Water heaters are available in the market in various sizes and types. There are water heaters which runs on various models like propane oil, natural gas, electricity, solar models and tankless. 2. Insulation of your water heater with a water heater blanket. This is a fact that whenever your water heater is not in use, even then it is has hot water stored in it. So this is a fact that in such circumstances the hot water in the tank loses heat if the tank is not properly insulated. This loss of heat is referred to as standby loss. This loss of heat occurs due to stand by. One can save 4-9% of the bill for water heating.
The water heaters of the earlier days were manufactured in such a way that they do not possess an efficient insulation of the tanks. So, if you have an old water heater, then consider to jacket it. A heater blanket possessing a rating of R-5 to R-10 can be considered to be used.
While installing a heater blanket, you must ensure to leave those areas which has got manufacturer’s data and safety markings. Also those parts which contains access covers and thermostats are to be left blank. It is also suggested to leave a two inches cutout in the vicinity of the gas valve.
3. Reducing the usage of water and coming down on the demand for hot water. This is indeed the simplest way to reduce expenses related to hot water. You may build the habit of taking cold showers instead of hot showers. Also you must always be careful about checking leaky faucets which often becomes a prime reason for water wastage.
Shower heads with low flow should be used. This would help in saving a lot of hot water. Usage of Energy Star cloth water and dish washer appliances may help in reducing the demand for hot water. This technique can be so effective that washing water consumption can be cut down by 50%.
4. Insulating the water pipes. The water pipes through which hot water is being passed should ideally be insulated. By insulating the water pipes, the water will remain hot during the transmission. So, the hotter is the water, the lesser you need it. If the transmission pipes are well insulated, then the hot water reaching the faucet would be 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit hotter.
The beauty of this particular tactic is that it is not necessary to insulate the entire hot water pipeline. Instead only five to ten feet of the pipe from the water heater should be insulated. An insulation should be done in such a way that it suits the diameter of the pipe. All the zip ties should be securely fastened or an acrylic tape can be used. The fasteners and the pipe insulation can be easily availed in all prominent hardware stores.
