With my eldest, I never experienced calming her down or stopping her from throwing tantrums in public. She has always been in her best behavior when out of the house. I never had a problem with her going to the malls, running around or just simply taking and insisting the things that she likes.
Since SM City Olongapo became operational, I have taken the girls out twice already. I have noticed my 2 y/o daughter’s mood swings each time she’s stopped or cut from something.
First scene encountered was at the toy section where she would not let go of the pink shopping cart set that costs Php1,599.00. What I did was I let her push the cart thinking she’ll let go of it after sometime. I was wrong. When I tried taking the shopping cart back to the display area, she cried so loud showing anger that made her catch people’s attention. Good thing that the section nearby were all girl’s clothes. So I took her there and let her tried on a pair of jeggings. She loves dressing up, and that made her stop from throwing tantrums in the meantime.
Second scene encountered was when we passed the Disney collection of sunglasses. She took one and asked help from her nanny to put it for her. You won’t believe when she asked for a “miyor”. I saw the guy attending them looked for a mirror. As expected, she won’t let go of the pair that costs more than Php400.00. She was screaming “Nooooooooo!” Again, we were lucky to have her attention diverted to something else and able to take her farther, and told her that we’d go and find Sponge Bob.
Third encounter happened yesterday. I promised my eldest that I will give them time to play, so I did. The play section was full packed so I took them to trampoline instead. At first she didn’t want to go inside so I requested the guy in charge if the nanny can accompany them inside. They gladly allowed. I booked the 5 minutes play and when it was time, as usual my youngest disagreed. This time she was firm in screaming “Nooooooo! Closeeeeeee! Ishi jump!! She was commanding the guy to close the built-in zipper as tall as her, crying and throwing tantrums.
I’m sure there’d be more similar encounters as these. I just hope that we won’t run out of excuses and things that could divert her attention. I know that bribing and the like is a no no no but at this moment, that’s I could handle best the situation.
it’s not easy when kids go on a tantrum in public, some people who don’t have kids would look at you with contempt not knowing how it is…hayysss, pero ganun talaga kids would be kids…and for sure it will pass…
you handle temper tantrums great mommy! whenever Jared is throwing one in public I really lose it! i need more practice with patience…i will keep those examples in mind, thanks for sharing 🙂
Nice job, how about let her bring her favorite toy the next time you go, maybe this can divert her attention from all the things she sees..
