Taking care of a garden can be a lot of work, but once the work is done, your fingers are sore, you are caked in mud and you take that first step back. It is all worthwhile! The thing is, getting to this stage can be quite tough and many of us while we desire to have a lovely looking garden, have no clue where to start. Well, to help point you in the right direction, today we are looking at four things that if added to your garden would give it a bit of a personality, make it a place you want to spend time on and even help increase the value of your property. So keep on reading to see why things like flowers and a lean to greenhouse could be just what you need.
1: Plant Flowers To Give Your Garden Some Colour The easiest way to bring some more colour to your garden is with flowers. Now in an ideal world, you go to the store, buy the flowers and then have someone to take care of them and plant them for you. But most of us are going to have to roll our sleeves up, get the trowel out and plant them ourselves. This though is a huge part of the fun of turning your garden into something nice and you will feel really pleased with yourself when it is all done. If you look at this video here you can really see just how bright and lovely some flowers can be, now just imagine these strategically placed around your garden.
The key word we just used there was strategically. It can be very tempting to go into a garden store and just go nuts, buying up anything that looks nice. But sometimes less is more, especially if you do not have a large garden. The point we are trying to make here is that you need to plan out where your flowers are going to go. Will you have reds here? Maybe put some yellows just there to compliment them? It is always best to have at the very least a basic idea of the colour of flowers you want (do not worry if you do not know their names) and where they are going to go.
2: Add A Greenhouse Going from planting a few post to tending to flowers and growing your own food might seem like one heck of a big step. But with a greenhouse, you can give your garden a lot of charm and it does help give a garden that really traditional garden kind of vibe. We are not saying you need to go and get a greenhouse that is going to take up the whole of your garden. Even something a little more modest like a smart looking lean to greenhouse will not just look appealing. But it is also going to come in very handy. Once you have planted your flowers to make your garden look nice, you are more likely to look after them and be interested in the state of your garden if you have a little space to work.
You do not have to spend a fortune either. You can get greenhouses for very low prices these days so do not worry about having to spend hundreds and hundreds. Of course, if you do have a lot of space then you can go for something a little larger. One thing we will say is that while a greenhouse can look lovely in a garden, make sure you look after it. If it is wood give it an annual coating of treatment to keep the wood looking good, keep the glass or polycarbonate panels nice and clear. Also be sure you do not just fill it up with junk and use it like a shed as this can turn your greenhouse from charming, practical feature to junk yard!
A great resource we found is the best lean to greenhouses league table that’s produced and updated quarterly by WhatShed. So if you’re wanting to look into what’s currently available then you should check this page out here.
3: Somewhere For The Kids To Play Now you may think we are crazy for suggesting that having the kids run around in the backyard like they are making a new Lord Of The Flies movie is a way to make your garden look pretty. But your kids can help give the garden a real family kind of charm. We are talking about some kind of kids play centre. Your mind might be thinking of those plastic looking ones that you see kids climbing all over in Toys R Us (which can be effective in their own way) but if you really want to give your garden that little bit of class and also have somewhere for the kids to play then go for a more traditional wooden kind of structure.
What kind of structures are we talking about? Well, things like climbing frames, slides, playhouses and just anything that kids can get outside and have some fun on. If you look here you can get an idea of just how much charm these kind of structures can add to a garden. Playhouses and climbing frames come in all kinds of shapes and sizes and some are a lot cheaper than you would think, or if you a bit of a DIY master (or just think you are) you can have a go at making one yourself. It is great to make your garden look nice and pretty with things like flowers. But sometimes having that good ol’ family kind of style to it is even more charming. Just imagine having something like a small wooden lean to greenhouse at one side of the garden, flowers around the edges and then a lovely wooden child’s playhouse in the middle…far enough away from the flowers so the kids can’t wreck them!
4: Go Modern! While there is a charm to an old timey looking kids playhouse, a classic looking lean to greenhouse and lots of classic looking flowers. There is something to be said for going for a more modern design for your garden. So what are we talking about exactly here? Well instead of going for the classic things in a garden, you would go for something cooler and with the times. The “garden office” is a big thing these days, but really what we are talking about is a garden building that can be used for a variety of things. If you look here you can see some really cool and modern designs for garden buildings that will give your garden some real sophistication. Mixing this with some cleverly placed more smart looking flowers really can change an old boring garden into something cool.
Many people like to use a garden building for things like a gym, home office, summerhouse or just a place to have a few cold beers while you are watching the game with your buddies. Clever use of plant life around the edges of a garden building and some nice lights strategically places really can make your garden spring to life. If the whole classic traditional garden is really not your style, we certainly think going the more modern route is the way for you to go.
