Choosing the Right Hairstyle for Your Face Shape

If you are currently thinking about changing your hairstyle, you may have had a flick through a few magazines to try and find the right cut for you. There are a number of factors that need to be considered when choosing a hairstyle, and one of the most important is the shape of your face.

Highlight the good, and play down the bad Choosing the right hairstyle all comes down to highlighting your best features and playing down any bad points. For example, if you have a thin, long face, you should avoid long hair, as it’s only going to drag your face down further. If you do want to have a long hairstyle, you should make sure you go for a layered cut that this at your chin and cheekbones. Long, wavy hair also looks much better than straight hair.

If you have a heart-shaped face, like Reese Witherspoon, you should draw attention to your cheekbones and eyes. If you have an oval face shape, the good news is that you tend to look good in all hairstyles. One thing you do need to think twice about is adding height to the top of your head, i.e. stay away from a spiky short cut, teased up-do, or ginormous donut bun. If you have a square face, you will probably want to play down your angular, strong jaw, which is why a style with choppy ends works well, as well as curly styles. And finally, if you have a round face, stay away from short wavy or curly hair, which will make your face appear rounder.

Is it time for bangs? Bangs can make a boring hair cut look edgy and eye-catching. Plus, they look great with tape in hair extensions. You can have long, luscious locks; yet still have a striking look. When choosing bangs, the aim is to go for a style that is going to make your face appear more oval shaped. So, for instance, you should avoid wide, heavy blunt bangs if you have a square face, as this is going to make your angular face have more angles!

Can you wear short hair? Short hair does tend to suit all face shapes, but there are a few things that you do need to consider before you go for the chop. For example, if you have a round face and you choose the wrong short cut, you can make your face look rounder. Also, generally, if you have super curly hair, you should stay away from short cuts.

The hairstyle that never fails If you are looking for a hairstyle that is guaranteed to look amazing and is always on-trend, consider the so-called ‘perfect haircut.’ This is a cut that falls between the shoulders and chin. It looks good no matter whether your hair is blow-dried straight, air-dried, curled, or wavy. You can’t go wrong with this style!

Hopefully, you now have a better understanding as to why your face shape is important when choosing a hairstyle, as well as the different factors to consider.
