Pain is usually your brain’s way of telling you that something is wrong that is triggered by damages or injuries to the body. Meaning, pain is never a good thing and can often be a bad sign.
Many people ignore or dismiss pain as something they should just tolerate. I’m one of those. For as long as I can still bear it, I don’t take medicines and delay visit to doctors.
A couple of months ago, I have been getting a severe headache and pain on my nape. Little did I know, if not for what happened to my mom, I won’t be careful and go for a check-up. At 39, I was already advised and prescribed to take simvastatin as maintenance due to high cholesterol.
From then on, I have been very careful and aware that aside from the cause of pain, the pain itself can cause many harmful effect to the body including:
- Stress
- High blood pressure
- Sleep disturbances
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Poor attention span
- Poorer quality of life
These effects are more pronounced when the pains becomes prolonged over months, then it is called chronic pain. What we don’t know is that sudden short-term pain can become chronic if not treated early.
So please, if anyone of you is in pain, don’t just ignore. It could be a sign of severe illness.
