Getting a blog started is simple, but building a following takes time. I officially launched my blog on its own domain in 2007, but I spent quite a while on a free-hosted site before deciding to invest in my own domain and monetization. Here are the basic steps you can take to start your blog:
1. Select Your Blog Platform Choosing a platform is the first crucial step. You’ve probably heard of options like WordPress and Blogger. I personally use and recommend WordPress, which is known worldwide for being user-friendly. You don’t need to be an expert; you can easily find help online. It also offers countless free themes and plugins.
2. Choose Between Self-Hosted or Free-Hosted You need to decide if you want your blog to be self-hosted or free-hosted:
– Free-hosted blogs (like yourname.wordpress.com) limit your personalization and often make it difficult to monetize, as most advertisers prefer self-hosted sites. Critically, you don’t fully own the content, and free sites can sometimes be suspended.
– Self-hosted blogs allow you to have your preferred domain name (e.g., www.yourname.com). You can register your domain name and find hosting services on sites like GoDaddy or by searching Google for cheaper alternatives.
3. Design Your Blog Once you’ve chosen your platform (especially if you pick WordPress), you can dive into designing your site. There are tons of free themes available for download. Even if you start with zero knowledge, you can begin learning basic HTML to tweak and customize your design over time, just as I did.
4. Define Your Niche A niche is a specific market segment. You need to know who you want to target and what you want to talk about. I started with Parenting because it was the topic most relevant to me at the time. Researching and connecting with others in your field will help you generate ideas. If you’re unsure of your focus, don’t worry—just write about anything that engages your readers until you discover your passion. The key rule is: blog about what you are passionate about; this makes content creation much easier.
5. Promote and Network In the past, we relied on blog networks and “blogrolls” (a list of other blogs we visited) to build a community. Today, Social Media makes promotion much simpler.
– Start by creating a Facebook Page for your blog.
– Post a catchy excerpt and a link to your full blog post to drive traffic.
– Always accompany your posts with a compelling photo that you own. If you use someone else’s image or article, make it a strict habit to link – back or acknowledge the original author and owner. Never claim what isn’t yours.
The rest is simply consistency. And if you also want to monetize your blog sooner, do not expect quick results, getting paid from sponsored posts does’t happen overnight. If you feel overwhelmed, remember you have powerful helpers now (1) Google (2) YouTube (3) Social Media and (4) AI. I started without any expertise and learned everything through experience. If I’ve managed to keep blogging for over a decade, you can certainly do it, too!
When I first started my site in 2007, it was an HTML site I wrote from scratch. At that time I had no idea what blogging was and how I can just install cms and all the hard technical details are handled. These days its so much easier with WordPress and all its plugins/themes.
I believe we should blog what we are passionate about, as we can only blog long-term on something that we have interest in. For me, it’s health and nutrition.
